April 22
We are out at sea now. We left Massawa (in
Eritrea, in the Red Sea) this morning. All is quite well. I am sorry for
not writing lately, we have been on a trip up-country to Asmara. Asmara is
at an altitude of 7500 ft. so it is quite cold YEAH!!!!! It is so hot here
it is almost unbearable! Well, I will backtrack to Aden in Yemen. It was a
nice city in an extremely dry, rugged environment. Some great pictures...
we spent 4 days there and packed them in! They make a great salad with
feta cheese sprinkled on top there and lots of 'hobbes' a kind of fried
flat bread yummm. We also had a great rotisserie chicken and salsa there.
Well by now you must be concluding that I am hungry or something, I can't
get off the food! It was sad to leave there but Massawa was nice. We
arrived after a fast, 2.5 day passage. The town is really hot and we
ducked from pieces of shade to shade. Our friends were there which is nice
and we all (9) went on a sweltering 3 hour bus ride to Asmara. Asmara is
extremely old, it was on an old, camel trading-route. Then it was Turkish,
then it was gotten by the Italians. The influence of them is everywhere!
From the old Romanesque cathedral to the pizzarias and coffee-shops to the
accents of the people. We all really liked the place and the temperature!
Almost all of the buildings were boxy pale yellow and very picturesque.
And my gosh the pizza was good! We ate tons and couldn't get enough. The
big difference between it and Italy were the prices: 9 people ate 9
pizzas, 10 beers, 7 sodas and 2 large waters for 14.00$ US! We stayed in a
3rd floor hotel on the main street. There was a lovely view and it was
clean and nice. It turns out we were the 3rd people ever to go there! We
saw a u17 soccer match, the African championship between Eritrea and
Burundi. It was good but the players went in for the long almost hail-Mary
kicks. Well I will wrap it up with a fishing report: we caught a 3 foot
Spanish narrow-barred mackerel just 3 hours ago. great!
