Atlantic Ocean

Reports at the bottom of the page

The Atlantic Ocean comprises our visit in the Canary Islands as well as our crossing from Santa Cruz in the Canaries to Antigua in the Caribbean; the whole Atlantic stay stretched from the 21st of October, on which we left Gibraltar for a five-day passage to the Canaries, to the 10th of December, when we arrived in Antigua.

The Canary Islands

We left Gibraltar glad to get away and move on to somewhere else, as we had been there almost a month. The Canaries were certainly a refreshing change; the next place was Graciosa, a dry, fairly barren island with a small town and volcano-shaped hills and about twenty or thirty yachts, including several kid boats that Bronwen, Douglas and Emma spent a lot of time with. We spent about ten days there and moved on to a small town called Arguinguin, then several other islands before our last stop, Santa Cruz, a fairly big town where we stayed at a stern-tie dock and did a lot of shopping.

The Atlantic

We crossed the Atlantic Ocean from November 18, 2000, for 22 days until December 10. The Atlantic met our expectations of calmness and good winds (formed by stories from other cruisers) for almost all of the time. We also spent my birthday at sea, and although sea birthdays are never great and it was a bit frisky that day we had a fun time. We made bets on when we'd arrive in the Caribbean; I won at 21, which was closest to the actual number of days. (My prize was a certificate and cheap painting of a palm tree.)
